While this isn’t set in stone to always remain, it certainly is no easy task of changing. I’m talking about obtaining the “World’s Tallest Man” title. Throughout the years, there have been less than 20 individuals who have grown past 8 feet in height. Of all of these individuals, arguably the most famous is the so-called Alton Giant.
Who’s The Alton Giant aka The Tallest Man In The World?
Robert Wadlow stood at an incredible 8 feet, 11 inches by the time he passed away in 1940. Born on February 22nd, 1918, Robert Wadlow began his life at a completely average length. It wasn’t until age two or three that his parents noticed how quickly he was sprouting. By the time he was in elementary school, Robert’s teachers had to make special arrangements by having a custom desk built to handle his already large frame. When he turned eight years old, Robert was already a few inches taller than his father, who stood at a reasonable 6′. Robert’s incredible series of growth spurts were caused by an out-of-control pituitary gland that produced growth hormones continually throughout his life. Doctors have since suggested that if he had lived past 22 years old, he would have almost certainly reached 9 feet in height.
At age 13, the Boy Scouts of America (now called merely the BSA) had to craft custom uniforms for the fresh-faced teenager, as he’d already become over seven feet tall! The custom uniform required an impressive 14 yards of total fabric to make.
Robert’s first brush with fame outside of his small Illinois hometown of Alton was thanks to the adventurer and cryptozoologist Robert Ripley. Made famous in later years due to his publications about weird and interesting phenomena, as well as a hit show and series of subsequent museums, Mr. Ripley first made his living publishing hand-illustrated full page articles about the interesting sights he witnessed on his travels throughout the world. First in 1926, and then again in 1929 Robert Ripley published small pieces about the exceptionally tall Alton Giant.
These brushes with publicity eventually brought Robert Wadlow to the Ringling Brothers’ Circus, where he toured with the group for roughly two years before being forced into early retirement due to his declining health.
When traveling, Robert Wadlow required a specially built automobile with seats that extended well into the rear of the car to compensate for his exceptionally long legs. And it wasn’t just automobiles or clothing that needed to be specially designed. Everything from the chairs he sat in, to the razors he shaved with required modifications for his abnormal size. He even had a custom built lighter made because his hands were too large to operate the standard size.
Size Caused Health Problems
Robert’s health began to swiftly decline in his early twenties due to the sheer size of his ever-growing body. Because of his weight reaching over 300 pounds by the age of 18, he required special legs braces and a reinforced walking cane to get around. His shoes were also specially designed and became a local attraction after his passing. Oddly, it was his leg braces that eventually led to his demise. The medical devices would wear sores into his legs throughout constant use, one of which ultimately became infected. Robert’s body just couldn’t fight off the infection due to his size, and he officially left this Earth on July 15th, 1940.
Robert was said to be an incredibly kind individual. Professional journalist Dan Brannan penned a book about Mr. Wadlow in 2003, interviewing several of Robert’s friends and family, most of which have since passed away. He was quoted as saying that Robert was “…just a good human being, kind. He just really handled everything with class.”
To this day, there’s a life-sized statue of Robert in Upper Alton, Illinois, and he remains a favorite part of early-1920s Illinois history. The local organization that supplied him with his footwear, the International Shoe Company, even still uses licensed images of Mr. Wadlow in parts of their advertising.
